Approximately 1900+ Light Armored Vehicles (LAV) have been produced for the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force since 2001.  In Japanese, they are referred to as "Keisoukoukidousha" (Light Armored Mobility Vehicles). The LAV is used in the Armored Personnel Carrier, Anti-Tank, Command/Control, Convoy Escort, Liaison, Reconnaissance, Security and Weapons Carrier roles. Although there are not any purpose-built variants, the vehicles have been equipped specifically as Anti-Tank Missile, Company Commander, Machine Gun, Peace-Keeping Forces, Platoon Commander and Reconnaissance Vehicles.
