Originally developed as an evolution of the Manchester (which had proved troublesome in service and was retired in 1942), the Lancaster was designed by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roy_Chadwick\" title=\"Roy Chadwick\"\u003eRoy Chadwick\u003c\/a\u003e and powered by four \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolls-Royce_Merlin\" title=\"Rolls-Royce Merlin\"\u003eRolls-Royce Merlins\u003c\/a\u003e and in one of the versions, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bristol_Hercules\" title=\"Bristol Hercules\"\u003eBristol Hercules\u003c\/a\u003e engines. It first saw service with \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RAF_Bomber_Command\" title=\"RAF Bomber Command\"\u003eRAF Bomber Command\u003c\/a\u003e in 1942 and as the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strategic_bombing_during_World_War_II\" title=\"Strategic bombing during World War II\"\u003estrategic bombing offensive\u003c\/a\u003e over Europe gathered momentum, it was the main aircraft for the night-time bombing campaigns that followed.
